Good article.

I believe the Flynn effect is not only nonverbal and a testing artifact, but that it has had little effect on right-tail scores and stopped or even reversed over a decade ago in developed countries.

While the older tests such as the Stanford Binet 3rd rev of 1960 (form L-M) do give higher scores than modern tests, particularly for young children scored on Samuel R. Pinneau's extended score table, these are not age-ratio scores, (I think) but due in part to using a 16 reather than 15 point standard deviation, and possibly using the more accurate right-tail s.d. rather than overall s.d.. One thing that is rarely mentioned is that the right-tail s.d. is always smaller than the left-tail s.d. or the overall s.d., so high scores are always of greater rarity than they appear. Riverside Publishing (maker of both tests) uses both left- and right-tail s.d.s throughout their internal computations, as Kevin McGrew, the test developer, told me -- but these 2-sided s.d s don't make it into the technical manuals. The tables I compiled use only the overall s.d..

Looking at the PISA test data, by far the best international data, with large samples in each country, all of a very close to the same age, with a good test design and reporting not just average scores but 95% scores, allowing an accurate determination of the right-tail s.d., the United States mean is 98.41with a right-tail standard deviation of 13.31. This means that if you have an IQ score of a child, it understates the true rarity of that level of performance by 1.59 + 1.69*(score – 100)/15 points, so to reflect the actual rarity of that score in the US on a 100 mean, 15 s.d. scale, the scores must be adjusted:

120 → 124

125 → 129

130 → 135

135 → 141

140 → 146

145 → 152

150 → 157
